2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, Cabriolet Get Refreshed with New Tech

Look for their debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Refreshed for the 2018 model year, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet models will be available in three trim levels, including two AMG models. The standard Mercedes-Benz S560 gets a new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with 463 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, while the Mercedes-AMG S63 offers 603 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, also from a 4.0-liter biturbo V8. At the top of the range is the Mercedes-AMG S65, powered by a 6.0-liter V12 generating 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.

Those figures are good for a zero-to-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds in the S560, 3.4 seconds in the S63, and 4.0 seconds in the S65. According to the German automaker, the acceleration times are identical for the Cabriolet model as well.

For the coupe model, the S560 and S63 both come with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, but the S63 gets the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ version, which is permanent all-wheel drive with fully-variable torque split. The the S65 Coupe is rear-wheel drive only. On the convertible, things are a little different with only the S63 offered with 4MATIC+ permanent all-wheel drive, leaving the S560 and S65 Cabriolets to be rear-wheel drive.

In terms of transmission, the S560 and S63 both feature a nine-speed automatic, with the S63 getting an AMG Speedshift MCT. The S65’s engine is paired to an AMG Speedshift Plus seven-speed transmission.

As part of the refresh, both models receive newly designed front and rear bumpers, new headlamp design, OLED tail lamps, and new tailpipe design. There will also be two new exterior paint shades to choose from. Both AMG models get the new AMG Panamericana grille made famous on the AMG GT models.

Climbing into the cabin, there are three new trim lines: High-Gloss Brown Burl Walnut, Satin-finish Ash Grey, and designo magnolia flowing lines. Mercedes has also added one new upholstery offering called designo Exclusive Nappa leather Porcelain/Tizian Red. Like the sedan, the updated S-Class models feature two new high-resolution displays, measuring 12.3 inches diagonally. Both models have Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel that respond to swiping motions, similar to what can be done on a smartphone. Of course there’s the latest generation of the company’s COMAND infotainment system that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Lastly, the automaker’s latest semi-autonomous features are found in the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. That includes Active Distance Assist Distronic and Active Steering Assist, which now provide even more comfortable support for the driver by keeping a safe distance and controlling steering. Speed will be automatically adjusted ahead of bends, junctions, or roundabouts.

Look for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet lineup to arrive dealerships in mid-2018, with pricing announced closer to their launch date.
