Nissan has given its biggest model a thorough refresh with the updated 2020 Nissan Titan XD.
Hot on the heels of the regular Titan’s facelift last month, the XD model features most of the same improvements as its little brother. Nissan is banking on the new looks, increased power, and added safety features to help the Titan hold its place in the hyper-competitive truck market.
It starts up front with a streamlined face featuring an interlocking grille and simpler, more geometric lower bumper. New LED headlights come with “double boomerang” daytime running lights, with more LEDs in the back for the taillights and the pickup bed. Depending on trim level, the grille, bumper, and taillgate finishers all get different treatments: you’ll find more chrome on the top-end Platinum Reserve model, with gloss black detailing — and Lava Red Nissan badges — on the off-road-friendly Pro-4X.

“Streamlined” is how we’d describe the entire 2020 Titan XD lineup actually. Only one bed length will be available, with a 6.5-foot bed behind the Crew Cab body. The engine lineup is also down to one, with last year’s 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel bowing out. The “Endurance” 5.6-liter gas engine remains, and it’s picked up more ponies for the 2020 model year. All Titan XDs will produce 400hp and 413lb-ft of torque, increases of 10 and 19 over last year, respectively. Again, just like the regular Titan.
It shouldn’t be surprising that the XD picks up the Titan’s new nine-speed automatic transmission then, either. Gaining two cogs over the 2019 model allows the new rig to run a 4.083 final drive ratio, which Nissan says improves torque at the wheels. Every Titan comes standard with four-wheel drive.
Pro-4X, SL, and Platinum Reserve trims feature a 9.0-inch, high-res touchscreen infotainment setup with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Meanwhile every trim level includes a 7.0-inch programmable display behind the wheel.
The big tech news is the addition of Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard equipment on every Titan XD. This driver assist suite includes auto emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, high beam assist, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, and rear automatic braking — the last being an exclusive in this segment. Additional tech options include adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.

Nissan hasn’t released towing specs yet. The Titan XD is meant to plug the gap between half-ton pickups like the regular Titan and the behemoth 3/4 and 1-ton rigs out there, so expect its hauling numbers to reflect that. We should know more, including pricing, before sales begin in early 2020.
