BMW i8 Spyder Spied Looking Production-Ready

The BMW i8 Spyder has been caught by spy photographers looking ready to debut.

This is perhaps the first time the convertible model of BMW’s hybrid supercar has been caught this close, revealing new details we haven’t seen before. The car was also caught casually running around town, not doing high-speed laps at the Nurburgring or close to a secret testing facility, meaning BMW should be ready to debut it soon.

Although spy photographers haven’t caught the BMW i8 Spyder with its doors open, it is pretty safe to assume that they won’t open upwards like the coupe — having a convertible top makes it very difficult to pull off.

The Spyder model is expected to debut with a facelifted version of the coupe, which will likely share the same revised front end as the Spyder here. There are not many surprises expected with this debut, but both the coupe and Spyder should arrive with more power and a bigger battery that will offer more range. The BMW i8 currently offers about 23 miles (37 km) of electric range and up to 273 miles (440 km) of total range.
