BMW M8 Convertible Caught by Photographers at the Nurburgring

A prototype for the upcoming BMW M8 Convertible caught the attention of photographers during a recent outing to the Nurburgring in Germany.

The 8-Series and accompanying M8 have been spied on numerous occasions, but with the luxury coupe’s late-2017 arrival quickly approaching, it’s starting to look more production ready. These photos show a prototype with some production-looking wheels, large drilled rotors with M Performance calipers and a quad-tip exhaust – the key features giving it away as an M8 and not your standard 8-Series.

The prototype continues to wear heavy camouflage that conceals the majority of its front and rear ends and hides some of the body lines. We already have a fairly good idea of what to expect from the new 8-Series and M8, however, thanks to the Concept 8-Series BMW showed off earlier this summer.

We also know what to expect in regards to the powertrain – at least to a certain degree. The M8 is expected to have a more powerful version of the 600 horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 found in the new M5, which will be joined by the M5’s all-wheel drive system and eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. According to a recent report, the engine should produce more than 615 horsepower in the M8 and M8 Convertible.

In a recent interview with Autocar, BMW’s M division president Frank Van Meel explained the M8 will be the brand’s new halo model, so you can expect plenty of power and performance to be on tap.

“We certainly want to make a statement with this car. It will sit at the very top of our model range and, for now, we have no confirmed plans for any series production model above it, so we understand it must have a specification suiting its position in our hierarchy,” he said.

The 2018 BMW 8-Series and M8 is expected to debut sometime later this year, perhaps at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show in late November.
