F1 Cars to Take to the Streets of Miami in 2018 for Live Demonstration

Liberty Media Group, which owns the rights to the Formula 1 racing series, is considering hosting an F1 Live event in Miami in 2018.

The inaugural F1 Live event was held in London last year and saw teams and drivers perform demonstration runs in F1 cars in front of over 100,000 fans. All of the drivers except for world champion Lewis Hamilton were in attendance for the event, demonstrating both current day and vintage Grand Prix cars. The event in Miami would be very similar to the London event, it’s understood, and would be joined by similar F1 Live stops around Europe and in Asia.

“We plan something similar in Marseille, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Miami, but not with so many cars,” F1 managing director for commercial operations, Sean Bratches, told . “We believe that this contact of Formula 1 with the audience outside the racetrack is important. It also carries our message to people we would not otherwise reach.”

F1 Live was held during the build-up to the 2017 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. All F1 Live events to be held in 2018 will serve as build-up events to country’s race it’s hosted in. The Berlin stop will preview the German Grand Prix a Hockenheim, for example, while the event in Marseilles will be held ahead of the reborn French Grand Prix. With the US GP scheduled for late October, it’s likely F1 Live in Miami will be held in the fall.

As discovered by , Liberty filed a trademark application for the ‘Grand Prix of Miami’ and the ‘Miami Grand Prix’ last year. The company is also believed to have visited the Miami region in order to evaluate the possibility of hosting a street race there. Liberty has trademarked the Grand Prix of New York, the New York Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Grand Prix as well, a sign that it would like to add a second US GP to the F1 calendar.
