Hyundai FE Fuel Cell Concept Has Nearly 500 Miles of Range

Hyundai is showcasing its commitment to green technology with the introduction of the FE Fuel Cell Concept, a hydrogen fuel cell car with 490 miles of range.

Hyundai says that this concept previews a 2018 fuel cell-powered crossover, likely a new generation Tucson fuel cell.

The FE Fuel Cell Concept previews one of 14 future low-emission vehicles to come from the Korean automaker in the next three years. These 14 cars will be electric, hybrid gas-electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell powered, like this concept.

Speaking of the concept, it’s a step more advanced than the current Tucson Fuel Cell, which was introduced back in 2015. This FE Fuel Cell Concept is said to be 20 percent lighter and 10 percent more efficient. Additionally, Hyundai boosted the power density of the fuel cell by 30 percent. That means it’s expected to get 490 miles of range on a single tank of hydrogen.

The design of the car is inspired by nature along with water, which is the only emission of the vehicle. With a minimalist design, the car features a slick rear spoiler and integrated vents that help provide improved efficiency via aerodynamics.

Inside, the car features an integrated Humidor Cabinet that Hyundai says recycles the water emitted by the vehicle into the cabin, making compartmentalized cigar storage possible. There’s also portable battery packs so you can power your devices on the go. In the trunk, the car features a storage and charging space for an electric scooter, something that was first seen at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Finally, the production vehicle inspired by the FE Fuel Cell concept will feature the Hyundai Smart Sense driver assistance technologies, making it not just green, but safe, too.
