New Mercedes-AMG G63 Expected to Debut in March

The new Mercedes G-Class recently made its debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and the AMG versions aren’t far behind.

Spy photographers have already caught the high-performance AMG versions of the new G-Class testing, so it’s not a huge surprise a debut in imminent. Speaking to , marketing manager for the G-Class, Ian James, confirmed the AMG variants will be available as part of the 2019 model year. The German automaker is expected to show at least one model at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March, likely the G63.

“The AMGs are not going to be far away,” said James. “In the more recent history of the G-Class, the AMG vehicles have been wildly popular, and it fits the image, the craziness, if you like, of the G.”

The standard G550 powered by a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine bowed in Detroit and will head to dealerships this fall. Official pricing for the model has not yet been announced, but Mercedes says a “slight price increase” is likely.

As for the future of the G-Class lineup, the company plans to expand past its core models and will test the market with special editions. That suggests a Mercedes-Maybach version is a possibility for the future.
