2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is Basically a Z/28

2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is Basically a Z/28

Word just in from Daytona, the savages at Chevrolet have given the ZL1 even more speed.

The ZL1 1LE takes the basic ZL1 and cranks the volume up to 11 with the addition of an even more advanced aero package and the return of an old friend.

Multimatic’s Dynamic Suspension Spool Valves are reunited with the Camaro family along with adjustable-ride-height front struts. Entering the realm of race car, the ZL1 1LE will ride on new lightweight 19-inch forged wheels, wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R rubbers, 305 section fronts and fatboy 325s in the back.

The ZL1 1LE retains its 650-horsepower, supercharged LT4 V8, but, like the SS 1LE, it will only be available with a six-speed manual despite the otherworldly capability GM’s new 10R90 10-speed automatic provides.

Visually, the ZL1 1LE more closely resembles Chevy’s new Camaro GT4 – rightly massive rear wing, even bigger front splitter, huge diveplanes and enlarged grille openings. Complimenting the aero is a satin black wrapped hood with carbon fiber insert, black bowties, a flowtie and smoked tail lamps.

“The track-focused 1LE package offers progressive levels of performance across the Camaro lineup, from the V6 1LE to the SS 1LE,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “But with the new ZL1 1LE, the progression takes a quantum leap — this is the ultimate track-day Camaro.

This is actually the car we’ve seen Chevy working out at the Nurburgring for the better part of the last year. Thanks to the mechanical and aerodynamic changes, plus a 60 lb diet, the 1LE derivative is 3 seconds faster around GM’s in-house Milford road course than a ‘base’ ZL1.

But enough with the words…
