BMW has announced a new quad-turbocharged, diesel six-cylinder engine.
The new oil burner was introduced at the 2016 Vienna Engine Symposium with the German automaker confirming that it will be its top-of-the-line diesel offering. The new engine will be used in the 750d xDrive with other models to follow, generating 394 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. According to the German automaker, in the 7 Series, the new diesel engine will propel the sedan to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds while top speed will be set at 155 mph.
With the massive Volkswagen dieselgate scandal still ongoing, BMW isn’t shying away from further investing into high-performance diesel engines. This particular engine serves as a convincing competitor to V8s while offering more power and more responsiveness than current six-cylinder diesel mills.

The new engine is based on BMW’s modular engine layout with two high-pressure turbochargers and two low-pressure units. Fuel consumption is expected to see a five-percent reduction and the maximum torque is actually limited by the capabilities of the eight-speed automatic transmission BMW sources from XF.
It’s unclear if the new quad-turbo diesel six-cylinder engine will make its way to the U.S.
