Chevy Camaro ZL1 Hits 60 MPH in First Gear with Manual Transmission

Chevrolet has already confirmed the new Camaro ZL1 will go zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds, but did you know it could do it without even switching gears?

The news comes from lead engineer Al Oppenheiser, who recently spoke at the Camaro 50th Anniversary celebration leading up to the Woodward Dream Cruise, letting slip that the car can hit 60 mph in first gear when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox.

Earlier this year, Chevy claimed its new 10-speed automatic, which will also be available on the ZL1 as an option, shifts faster than Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch transmission. The American automaker said the 10-speed’s wider 7.39 overall gear ratio enhances off-the-line performance with an aggressive first gear ratio of 4.70.
