2020 Ford Explorer ST Rumored With Around 400 HP

The Ford Edge ST might just be the first of many high-performance crossovers and SUVs from the brand.

According to a recent report from sister site , the next Ford Explorer will offer four engine options, one of which will be a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 for the Explorer ST. Sources say it’s the same engine currently found in the Lincoln Continental and MKZ models, where it makes 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Expect a possible bump in performance since this will be branded as an ST model.

As for the other three engines, the Explorer’s current 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will carry over, while the 3.5-liter V6 will be replaced by a 3.3-liter V6 that is currently the entry-level engine found in the F-150. The fourth option will be a hybrid variant that the American automaker expects to further enhance the Explorer’s dominance over the police vehicle market. Also heading to the new Explorer will be the 10-speed transmission found in the F-150 and Mustang.

Additional changes are heading to the next Explorer, which will ride on a rear-wheel-drive platform. It will be built on Ford’s new modular CD6 platform at the company’s Chicago Assembly Plant, but unlike the F-Series pickup trucks, it will have mostly steel body panels.
