BMW Confirms CSL Nameplate is Coming Back

CSL will replace GTS in BMW‘s hierarchy.

Only two vehicles in BMW’s rich history have ever sported the CSL nameplate: the 3.0 CSL and the E46 M3 CSL. Many consider them to be among the best of BMW’s models, and that is likely the reason why BMW has been so cautious to use it. But that is going to change in the future, as head of BMW M, Frank Van Meel, has confirmed to  the CSL nameplate will return on M cars.

Van Meel shared that the CSL versions of models will replace the existing GTS as the range-topping version, but we don’t know which models will get the treatment. What Van Meel was willing to share is that we’ll never see an X5 M CSL, and the company is open to four-door sedans getting the CSL branding.

Previous rumors suggest a BMW M2 CSL is on its way, and it makes sense the M2 would be the first of a new generation to receive the nameplate.
