BMW Makes America Great Again With New Anniversary M3

The one-of-a-kind 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition will make its world debut at the 2017 SEMA Show this week.

However, BMW has released a photo batch online ahead of the big reveal tomorrow.

The M3 was originally imagined as a homologation special for Group A Touring car racing back in 1986, the first generation M3 revolutionized the sports sedan market and the brand hasn’t looked back since.

Designed to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the M3 in the US, the custom design was created by BMW Group Designworks in conjunction with BMW Individual. BMW has yet to release information on the car’s transformation, but the changes are relatively easy to distill from the photographs.

The M3 30 Years American Edition receives a full suite of BMW M Performance Parts, the exterior uses carbon fiber for the front splitter, rear diffuser, mirror caps, side skirts, and the pedestal wing that looks like it was swiped from an M4 GTS. Rounding out the look is a coat of Frozen Red Metallic paint, an M Performance exhaust with carbon fiber tips, and the M4 CS’ 10-spoke wheels finished in pale gold.

More substantial changes happen inside with America’s blue, white, and red tricolor featuring heavily. The seats themselves are upholstered in white leather, the seat backs and inserts are blue, while the edges are finished in red leather. Red and white leather also feature on the door panels, and in the passenger footwell.

Lastly, there’s a special 30th-anniversary American flag design stitched into the front headrests, which also appears on the passenger side of the carbon fiber dash insert.

Mechanical changes remain unannounced, but we do know the car makes use of BMW’s 6-speed manual transmission. It’s possible the M3 30 Years American Edition is actually a mild preview of the company’s forthcoming M3 CS – but only time will tell.
