Feds Investigating Ram Pickups, Dodge SUVs That Can Roll Away

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced an investigation looking into about one million Ram trucks and Dodge SUVs that can apparently roll away after being put into park.

NHTSA says it has 25 reports from owners alleging that the vehicle rolled away while nine of those resulted in injuries. The 2013-2016 Ram 1500 and 2014-2015 Dodge Durango are the subject of the investigation, both of which use the same rotary-style shifter.

Earlier this year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled over 1.1 million vehicles also for roll away issues, but those used a different style of shifter. In that case, those operating the vehicle would falsely believe they had shifted to park. The story gained notoriety when actor Anton Yelchin was killed when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled away and struck him.

It isn’t clear yet what the cause of the issue is with these trucks and SUVs. Once the NHTSA investigation concludes, the agency will decide whether the problem poses a serious safety issue and warrants a recall.
