Ferrari, McLaren and Tesla Join Massive Takata Airbag Recall

The McLaren P1, every Tesla Model S and even some Ferraris are now included in the massive recall for faulty Takata airbags.

Over two-and-a-half years since the Takata airbag recall first began, numerous automakers have been added to the list, meaning some companies have been selling brand new vehicles with faulty airbags.

Tesla is recalling every 2012-2016 Model S manufactured, while McLaren’s entire lineup is being recalled including the 570, 650S, 675LT, MP4-12C and P1. Also included in the new expansion is Ferrari’s entire lineup from the 2016-2017 model years, as well as the 2017 Audi R8. The 2012 Lexus LFA and Fisker Karma models have also been added to NHTSA’s list.

Since the recall started, 11 deaths in the U.S. have been linked to the faulty Takata airbag inflators, which are potentially fatal for spraying metal shrapnel at occupants when deployed.

So why is it that automakers continued selling cars knowing that they were equipped with faulty airbags? When the recall was first announced, Takata held a large share of the airbag market and it was difficult for automakers to find another supplier. Since the airbags take a few years to degrade and fail, automakers chose to continue manufacturing cars knowing they would eventually have to be recalled, instead of stopping production while they searched for a new supplier.
