Hyundai Gets Serious About Performance With Launch of 275-HP Veloster N

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N has made its debut in Detroit, marking the official launch of the automaker’s performance sub-brand in North America.

Powering the Veloster N is the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine as found in the i30 N, which is making 275 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching. A sports exhaust system with multiple modes makes sure the N has the soundtrack to back up its performance credentials.

The Veloster N also features a drive mode select system called the ‘N Grin Control System’, which offers Normal, Sport, N, Eco and N Custom modes. Depending on the mode chosen, the system will adjust the throttle response, rev-matching, exhaust note, suspension damping, diff settings and steering feel. N Custom mode allows the user to select an individual setting for each of the above-mentioned attributes.

In addition to the electronically adjustable dampers, the Veloster N also features a load transfer control system that reduces pitch under braking and acceleration and helps to mitigate body roll when cornering. An electronically controlled limited slip diff also increases cornering speed through torque vectoring. Helping bring things to a stop are performance brakes measuring 13.6 inches in the front and 12.4 inches in the rear.

Moving outside, the Veloster N is differentiated from standard versions of the hatch thanks to an N front fascia, a large rear diffuser, big dual exhaust tips and an N spoiler. Additionally, 18-inch alloy wheels come standard, while larger 19-inch units are optional. The standard tires are Michelin Pilot SuperSports, while Pirelli P-Zeros are available for the 19-inch alloys.

New interior equipment includes N design cloth sport seats, an N steering wheel and shift knob, N performance blue seat belts and an N-specific digital center cluster display. There’s also N badges just about everywhere you look.

“Veloster N takes Hyundai to a new level of purchase consideration for true driving enthusiasts in the U.S. market,” said Hyundai performance boss Albert Biermann.

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N will arrive at Hyundai dealers in the US and Canada later this year.
