Nearly 228,000 vehicles in the U.S. are affected by the recall.
According to Mazda, the recall is due to the parking brake possibly not fully releasing or failing to hold the cars, increasing the risk of a crash. The affected cars include the 2014-2015 Mazda6 and the 2014-2016 Mazda3. The issue is caused by water getting into the brake caliper, causing a shaft to corrode and bind. As a result, the parking brake can get stuck in the on position or fail to fully engage, potentially causing the cars to roll unexpectedly if parked on a slope.

To resolve the issue, Mazda dealers will inspect the rear brakes and if the shafts are corroded, they will replace the calipers. If they are not corroded, a boot will be replaced to keep water out. Mazda will begin notifying affected owners starting August 21, 2017.
