McLaren has plans to bring a pure electric hypercar to market that would be on par with the 675LT in regards to performance.
According to , the McLaren EV will be a part of the British automaker’s range-topping Ultimate Series lineup. It will arrive after the ultra high-performance P15, which is due later this year, and after the three-seat BP23 that is expected to arrive in 2018.
Interestingly, McLaren plans to produce an initial run of 5 cars, which would be handed out to some of McLaren’s best customers as driven by them as part of the development process. It will then be more widely produced, assuming the beta testing phase goes to plan, of course.
The benchmark for the EV’s performance is McLaren’s own 675LT. Powered by its 3.-8liter twin-turbocharged V8, the 675LT makes 666 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Its top speed is 205 mph.
McLaren is currently gathering intel on high-performance electric powertrains through its involvement in the FIA Formula E race series. McLaren Applied Technologies will supply the series with a new battery pack from 2018 onward that will allow the cars to complete an entire race on a single charge. Autocar points out this battery tech would translate well into a high-performance EV road car.
If we had to wager on the McLaren EV’s arrival, we’d say it would arrive sometime in 2019 or 2020.
