McLaren Sold a Record Number of Cars in 2016

McLaren sold a record number of cars and posted its fourth consecutive year of profitability in 2016, outperforming its own annual sales expectations by 10 percent.

The British supercar manufacturer moved 3,286 cars in 2016, a 99 percent increase from 2015. It also posted before tax profits of £9.2M from an annual sales revenue of £649.8M, representing an increase of 70 percent over the £5.4M it reported in 2015.

McLaren’s Sports Series models, those being the 570S, 570 GT and 540C, proved to be the most popular of its cars with 2,031 deliveries. The remainder of the cars sold were from its Super Series line, which saw 1,255 deliveries. The Super Series line was largely carried by the 675LT and 675LT Spider models, which were limited to just 500 units each and sold out “in a matter of weeks.”

The automaker has now put in place a new business plan it calls Track 22. The first car to be launched under the plan was the 720S, which has sold out for 2017 with all 1,500 units having already been claimed. A new Sports Series model will also soon join its portfolio, with the 570S Spider enjoying its first in-person appearance at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.

“The positive financial performance in 2016 was underpinned by a 44% increase in sales revenues and is further proof that McLaren Automotive’s growth plans are both achievable and sustainable,” said McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt. ”Investment in R&D and future product during the period of £129.1M – 20% of turnover – reaffirms our commitment to the Track22 Business Plan that will produce 15 new models or derivatives by the end of 2022 and the focus going forwards will be on successfully delivering these new products and managing continued profitable growth.”
