About one-million cars are being recalled worldwide.
According to U.S. government documents, the recall is due to the starter motor that can overheat and possibly cause fires. The recall covers certain 2015-2017 Mercedes C-Class, E-Class, CLA, GLA and GLC models and includes nearly 308,000 units in the U.S. The issue occurs if the engine and transmission won’t turn over, causing the current limiter in the starter motor to overheat from repeated attempts to start the vehicles. If the current limiter overheats, it can melt nearby parts.

Mercedes is aware of 51 fires worldwide and about 30 have occurred in the U.S. It is not aware of any injuries and the German automaker began investigating the issue last June after receiving field reports of “thermally damaged” current limiters.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified this month, and then again in July when replacement parts are available. The fix will involve installing another fuse to prevent the current limiter from overheating and it will take about an hour to install, free of charge.
