Mercedes to Bring AMG Project One, Fuel Cell GLC and More to Frankfurt

Mercedes-Benz is planning plenty of debuts for the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, including the AMG Project One hypercar, a fuel cell version of its GLC crossover and more.

The arrival of the Project One is surely the most anticipated Mercedes debut that will occur at Frankfurt. The hypercar will be the first road car to utilize hybrid Formula 1 technology and will feature the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine found in Mercedes-AMG’s F1 cars. Between the engine and accompanying electric motors, the hypercar should make just over 1,000 horsepower.

Also arriving in Frankfurt is a new “smart showcar” that will exhibit a study by Mercedes’ EQ electric vehicle sub-brand. The concept will be fully autonomous and electric, but for now, that’s all we know. The automaker’s teaser image for the show (above) shows a white-painted version of its Vision Gran Turismo concept on an EQ branded display stand, so it’s possible that is the vehicle Mercedes is simply calling its “smart show car.”

Continuing with the EQ theme in Frankfurt will be the FLC F-Cell EQ Power, which is to be a hydrogen fuel cell version of the GLC crossover. Minimal details are available, but you can expect it to feature some futuristic styling cues like those seen on other Mercedes EQ concepts and a usable amount of range – perhaps as many as 300 miles.

Making its auto show debut in Frankfurt is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup. The Nissan-based pickup debuted in full earlier this summer, however its upcoming appearance in Germany’s fifth largest city will mark the production version’s first auto show appearance. Unfortunately, it won’t be arriving in North America. Also present at Mercedes’ stand in Frankfurt will be the facelifted version of the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet in both standard and AMG versions.

The 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show media days will kick off on September 14th.
