New Formula E Racer Looks Like it's From 2050

The FIA Formula E series has debuted its second-generation racecar, which will be used from the 2018-2019 season onward.

Apart from the ultra futuristic bodywork, the new Formula E racer has received the FIA-mandated halo cockpit protection device, which will also be adopted by Formula 1 this season. Unlike F1, though, Formula E has dolled up the halo with high-tech looking ring of lighting. The new FE chassis will be built by Spark Racing Technologies, while the battery pack will be supplied by McLaren Applied Technologies.

The battery pack is nearly twice the size of the current Formula E car’s, allowing drivers to finish a full race without having to switch cars. It’s not clear how much faster they will be than the current car, but with revised aero and an improved electric drivetrain, lap times are expected to drop by a large margin.

“When we started Formula E, our goal was to break the mould and challenge the status quo – bringing a revolution to motorsport,” said Formula E director Alejandro Agag. “This next generation car represents that revolution.”

“The cars will be faster and will have almost double the amount of energy storage capacity and double the range, demonstrating the continuous evolution of battery technology,” he added.

“Together with the FIA, we’ve achieved a great milestone with the introduction of this car and I can’t wait to see it on track.”

The new Formula E car will be presented for the first time at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in early March.
