Next BMW X5 is Getting New Gas Engines

The next BMW X5 is expected to be introduced next year.

That’s a bit early since the current one was just launched for 2014, but we’ve already seen shots of the new SUV circling the Nürburgring.

The new X5, code-named G05, will be put on the CLAR platform. Short for cluster architecture, the platform will be the basis for the 3, 5, 6, and 7 Series, as well as the X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7. It uses more high-strength steel, aluminum, and carbon-fiber to shed up to 300 pounds. The new platform is the reason for the sped-up timeline.

Now BMW Blog reports that the new luxury SUV will get brand new gas engines, in 40i and 50i guises. The 40i will be a revised B58 3.0L straight-six that is new enough that it should probably get a new name. The B58TU (for Technical Update) is reported to make 335 hp in non-M Performance cars, up 15 hp from the current engine.

The N63 4.4-liter V8 will get a big update too. Enough that it may get a new codename, although that name isn’t yet known. It’ll make 465 hp, and will be different from the M550i.

Diesel engines for other markets will be a 30d using the 265-hp B57 3.0-liter straight-six engine, the 40d with a 320-hp version of the same sixer, while the M50d is expected to get the quad-turbo B57S with 400 hp.
