Next-Generation Mazda SkyActiv Engine 'is Just Weeks Away'

The new Mazda SkyActiv II engine is expected to debut later this month in Frankfurt.

According to a report from , details on the new engine will be announced at a technology forum in Frankfurt and it will feature the industry’s first homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI). It’s a revolutionary “sparkless” ignition technology that has been rumored since early this year and is expected to cut fuel consumption by a third. The engine will be offered first in the 2019 Mazda3, due next year. Mazda will preview the next-generation Mazda3 with a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show this October, says.

Until the new Mazda3 debuts however, the important news is the new HCCI engine from Mazda, which will eventually find its way throughout the Japanese automaker’s lineup. Following the Mazda3, expect the SkyActiv II engine to be used in the Mazda6, before heading to the Mazda2 in other markets. Replacements for the CX-3, MX-5 Miata, and CX-9 will all get the technology, along with the CX-5.

The China-only CX-4 and the Japan-only CX-8 are also expected to benefit.
