Which high-performance luxury sedan would YOU rather own, the brand-new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio or BMW’s stalwart M3?
This is a tough choice, because the Italian in the tossup offers a lusty, Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that cranks out a borderline-ridiculous 505 horsepower. As for torque, it measures 443 lb-ft with the engine maxing out at a heady 7,400 RPM. Beyond this, the Giulia is absolutely stunning, its body almost a piece of art.
Twist is sent to the rear wheels exclusively through an eight-speed automatic transmission; a manual is not offered, which sucks. Still, this strategy is probably best for all-out performance and this flavor of Giulia can reach 60 miles an hour in as little as 3.8 seconds.
The Alfa’s transmission weakness is one of the M3’s strengths; it can be had with either a seven-ratio dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual. Choice, it’s a beautiful thing.
In typical BMW fashion, an inline-six motivates the M3, providing 425 horses and 406 lb-ft of torque, figures that are plenty impressive even if they fall short of what’s available in the Quadrifoglio.
That firepower is enough to propel this Bimmer to mile-a-minute velocity in as little as 3.9 seconds when equipped with the self-shifting transmission; the manual takes two extra tenths to do the same.
When it comes to pricing, the M3 has an edge, starting at around $65,000. To get a Giulia of the Quadrifoglio variety plan on spending about 74 large.
