The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is Beginning to Take Shape

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been spied testing at the Nurburgring once again, revealing additional details about the highly anticipated hardcore coupe.

Like previous Black Series models, the AMG GT variant will be lighter and more powerful than the standard version of the coupe and should also feature some new aero components for additional downforce. These prototypes appear to be based on the AMG GT R, but are differentiated by the rear diffuser, which has been plucked from the AMG GT4 racecar, new lightweight wheels and a roll cage. The R’s huge, center-mounted single exhaust outlet has also been replaced by a twin-pipe setup that is worked into the diffuser.

If you’re curious what the production AMG GT Black Series will look like, we’d suggest you take a glance at the AMG GT4 racecar. Compared to the R, it has a larger front splitter, front dive planes, a vented hood, a prominent rear wing and the aforementioned diffuser. These are all improvements we could see being applied to the Black Series and with the parts being race tested, it seems possible AMG would implement similarly designed components for the Black Series.

The AMG GT Black Series will retain the car’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, but it could offer up more than the 577 horsepower it makes in the R. It will also be lighter thanks to various carbon fiber components and a polycarbonate rear window, which should help improve its pace both down the straights and through the corners.

Look for the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series to debut sometime next year. The Geneva Motor Show is typically a hot bed for high-end reveals, so the Swiss show may play host to the Black’s debut.
