The New Toyota Supra May Not be Offered With a Manual

The new Toyota Supra is one of the most highly anticipated new cars, but enthusiasts may find themselves let down if leaked internal documents are to be believed.

The documents, originally obtained by , reveal the powertrains for both the new Supra and the related BMW Z4. They indicate the Supra will be offered with a ’30i’ engine and a ’40i’ engine, meaning it will likely receive BMW’s 248 horsepower 2.0-liter turbo and 335 horsepower turbocharged inline-six. For the Supra, it only shows the engines paired with an automatic transmission, while the Z4 looks set to receive a manual of some sort.

There may be hope for you prospective manual Supra owners yet. The document was prepared well before the arrival of the production Z4 and Supra, so things are subject to change. It’s hard to see Toyota, the company that brought back the 86 to appease enthusiasts, dropping the ball by not offering the Supra with a manual in America. If the Supra is auto only, the saving grace would be that BMW knows how to build a good, quick-shifting automatic.

BMW will show a concept version of the Z4 at this month’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance before the production car arrives sometime in 2018. A concept version of the Supra is expected to arrive just a few months later in October at the Tokyo Motor Show, with the production version also expected to arrive sometime next year. We may know plenty more about the Z4, and therefore the Supra, in just a few weeks’ time.
