If you’re shopping for a car, minivan or truck, the list will help you find the safest vehicle you can buy in 2017.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced its Top Safety Pick+ award winners for 2017, and new for this year, each vehicle must earn a good (the highest possible rating) or acceptable rating in the new headlight evaluation in order to receive the top award. The other parameters of the test haven’t changed, which means vehicles must also earn good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints tests, as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention with standard or optional automatic emergency braking.

Thanks to the new headlight ratings, just 38 vehicles managed a Top Safety Pick+ award, down from 79 models in 2016.
