There's Another American Automaker Promising a Luxury, High-Performance EV

It seems like each year, there’s a new American automaker looking to build electric vehicles.

Faraday Future created headlines earlier this year with a crazy concept at the Consumer Electronics Show. Since then, Faraday Future has announced ambitious goals of setting up a factory in Nevada and has teased its first production car. Now, there’s another company on the horizon that promises to build its electric vehicles in the state of Arizona.

Lucid Motors held a press conference to confirm its plans, saying that it will add a “new manufacturing center” in Arizona to help create 2,000 new jobs by 2022. The company was previously called Atieva and its CTO is former Tesla vice president and chief engineer Peter Rawlinson. So, like Faraday Future, Lucid Motors touts former Tesla executives and has already confirmed plans to build a factory in the U.S. to manufacture electric vehicles.

The company rolled out two heavily camouflaged prototypes at its press conference, which you can watch here. The only details it was willing to share is that its EV will have a range of over 400 miles reportedly from an 87-kWh battery pack. It will also boast 1,000 horsepower to give it a zero-to-60 time of under three seconds.

Lucid Motors is currently based out of Menlo Park, California and has been operating as battery and electric motor manufacturer Atieva since 2007.
