This One Tweet Shows How Hard it Will be for VW to Earn Back Trust

If you think Volkswagen’s dieselgate scandal hasn’t left a lasting impression with customers, think again.

Just to give an idea of how much Volkswagen’s image has changed as a result of cheating on diesel emissions tests, the company made what seemed to be a harmless tweet earlier this week. “VW love is the passion we have for our vehicles. It’s a camaraderie between owners & vehicles,” the tweet read, quoting John B. As with everything on social media, it quickly spread around and Volkswagen owners chimed in.

One person, Bill Tamerlane, replied with “No camaraderie felt on my end. No proper escalation process for valid customer issues.” Another user talked about how he has been a “fanboy” of the brand, but his experience with TDI has killed the trust he had.

It may seem like a small sample size, but it does show the uphill battle Volkswagen has to change its image over the coming years.

@VW I’ve owned 20 air-cooled and water-cooled #VW cars. I’m a “fanboy” of the brand but my experience w/ #TDI has killed the trust I had.
