Top 10 Cheapest States for Check Engine Light Repairs: 2017

Fixing a check engine light could be costly depending on which state you live in.

CarMD has released its seventh-annual Vehicle Health Index, revealing the cheapest and most expensive states for check engine light-related problems. The study found that prices for fixing common check engine light issues can vary from state-to-state. For example, a faulty oxygen sensor (O2 sensor) can cost $233 in Michigan to replace (including parts and labor), while in Vermont it would cost $296.

This year’s study is based on car repair costs in 2016.

Here are the top 10 cheapest states for check engine light repairs, according to the 2017 CarMD Vehicle Health Index.

10. Wyoming

Wyoming has an average labor cost of $170.69 and an average parts cost of $190.74. Combined, the state has an average repair cost of $361.43. The state dropped significantly from being second-most expensive in last year’s rankings.


9. Indiana

Indiana saw its average repair cost rise this year, after being second-cheapest overall last year. This year, Indiana has an average repair cost of $360.11, which breaks down to an average labor cost of $161.39 and an average parts cost of $198.72.


8. South Dakota

Dropping two ranks this year is South Dakota, which was the 10th-cheapest state last year. This year, South Dakota has an average labor cost of $166.99 and an average parts cost of $192.82 for an average repair cost of $359.81.


7. Vermont

Last year, Vermont was in the middle of the pack ranking 25th overall, but this year it’s the seventh-cheapest state with an average repair cost of $359.71. Residents can expect to pay an average labor cost of $141.13 and an average parts cost of $218.58.


6. North Dakota

Last year, North Dakota was the fourth-most expensive state, but this year it’s one of the cheapest with an average repair cost of $354.50. Average labor cost in North Dakota is $159.41, while average parts cost is $195.09.


5. Ohio

Ohio residents on average are paying a bit more than last year, when the state was the third cheapest on the list. Average labor cost is $156.93 and average parts cost is $192.25, combining for an average repair cost of $349.18.


4. Hawaii

Last year, Hawaii was the 19th most expensive state on the list, but costs have dropped in the state to make it the fourth cheapest this year. Average repair cost in Hawaii totals $346.94, with an average labor cost of $148.11 and an average parts cost of $198.83.


3. Wisconsin

The state of Wisconsin stays relatively steady after finishing as fourth cheapest last year. This year, it has an average repair cost of $346.81, broken down by an average labor cost of $155.56 and an average parts cost of $191.25.


2. Maine

Maine also improves this year after being sixth cheapest in last year’s study. Average labor cost in Maine is $152.24, while average parts cost is $191.36. Combined, the average repair cost residents can expect to pay is $343.60.


1. Michigan

For the second year in a row, Michigan is the cheapest state for check engine light repairs. On average, residents can expect to pay $343.40 for repairs, with labor costing $160.63 and parts costing $182.77.
