Top 10 Most Expensive States for Check Engine Light Repairs: 2017

The cost of fixing a check engine light on your car can vary greatly from state to state.

The annual CarMD Vehicle Health Index analyzes the average labor and parts cost to repair common check engine light issues and this year’s study has revealed the most expensive states for check engine light repairs. As you can expect, costs can vary from state to state with some being significantly more expensive than others. For example, replacing a throttle body assembly has an average cost of $521 in Michigan, but the same repair will cost as much as $735 in North Dakota.

This year’s study is based on car repair costs in 2016.

Here are the top 10 most expensive states for check engine light repairs based on the 2017 CarMD Vehicle Health Index.

10. Tennessee

Last year, Tennessee was the 34th most expensive state for repairs, so the average repair cost in the state has jumped quite a bit. This year’s study found average labor cost to be $168.67 and average parts cost to be $217.23, for an average repair cost total of $385.90.


9. Colorado

Colorado stays fairly consistent as being one of the most expensive states, dropping one spot to nine from last year’s eighth-place finish. The average repair cost in Colorado is $387.24, comprised of an average labor cost of $169.20 and an average parts cost of $218.04.


8. Delaware

Delaware jumps up a few ranks from 22nd last year with an average repair cost of $387.74. The average labor cost in the state runs $164.38, while the average parts cost is $223.36.


7. Utah

Utah is up from number 14 to seventh most expensive with an average labor cost of $164.16 and an average parts cost of $223.79. Combined, the average repair cost in the state is $387.95.


6. Montana

Last year Montana finished ninth most expensive, so the average repair cost has also increased in the state. This year’s study has an average labor cost of $167.90 and an average parts cost of $220.41 for a total average repair cost of $388.31.


5. Maryland

Down from third-most expensive, Maryland has an average repair cost of $392.99. The average labor cost in the state is $162.03, while the average parts cost is $230.96.


4. Georgia

Georgia is up from 11th place this year with an average repair cost of $396.37. This year’s average labor cost is $168.56 and average parts cost is $227.81.


3. Rhode Island

Finishing in sixth place last year, Rhode Island is third this year with an average labor cost of $159.39 and an average parts cost of $246.44. Combined, Rhode Island residents can expect to pay an average repair cost of $405.83.


2. Washington, D.C.

The nation’s capital is second-most expensive on the list, up from 10th place last year. The average repair cost is $410.98, broken down by an average labor cost of $164.62 and an average parts cost of $246.36.


1. Connecticut

Connecticut rises from seventh place last year to become the most expensive state for check engine light repairs in this year’s study. The average repair cost in Connecticut is $411.45, thanks to an average labor cost of $160.93 and an average parts cost of $250.52.
