Will Mercedes Drop the Top on a Maybach Convertible?

CARS.COM — Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener hinted at a "big surprise" coming in a social media post over the weekend. Rumors abound that what Wagener hinted at is a convertible version of last year's stunning Vision Maybach 6 Coupe Concept.

During the 2016 Monterey Car Week, Mercedes-Benz revealed the Vision Maybach 6 Coupe Concept, a beautiful boat-tailed electric coupe. The 18.5-foot-long coupe featured gull-wing doors, glass gauges and a windshield that doubled as an information screen. The powertrain produced 738 horsepower and boasted a range of more than 200 miles, with a quick-charge feature that would allow for five minutes of charging to add 62 miles of range. Notably, Mercedes-Benz stated that the powertrain was in development to someday be put into a production vehicle.

Interestingly, the Instagram post highlighted video of sketches of the Concept IAA, a four-door "coupe" that featured active aerodynamic elements activated by either the press of a button or upon reaching 50 mph. The tail extends more than 15 inches, the wheels become flush with the tires, and various flaps and louvers move around to reduce drag.

Could the "big surprise" be a beautiful convertible version of a car we've already seen at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance? Will it have active aerodynamic features seemingly ahead of its time? The 2017 Monterey Car Week takes place later this month in California, and we'll be sure to cover any news that comes out of it.
