Buick’s new compact premium Verano has just received a boost in the performance department, with the arrival of the new Verano Turbo for 2013 sporting a 2.o-liter turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder engine delivering 250 hp.
Full power is available at just 5300 rpm, with 260 lb-ft of torque coming on at just 2000 rpm. Of note, 234 lb-ft of power is available from 1700 to 5500 rpm meaning that while the car does have a solid 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds, it will feel peppy no matter what gear you’re in. The cars nearest rival, the Acura ILX 2.4 makes just 200 hp – though it does weigh considerably less.
This same engine can be found in the Buick Regal Turbo, where is was named to the Wards Auto 10 Best Engines list for 2012.
“The 2.0L turbo engine was designed for refinement, higher output capabilities and reduced noise,” said Amy Joss, Ecotec 2.0L assistant chief engineer. “The way it sounds, the power delivery and the refined character are all fitting of a luxury sedan with a fun side.”
The engine will be mated to a choice of either a six-speed manual or automatic, as Buick continues to court enthusiasts by offering manual transmissions.
“Buick’s engine strategy continues to be driven by intelligent performance,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick Marketing. “Four-cylinder engines, turbocharging and e are all the right solutions for today’s market. With these advanced technologies, Buicks are more efficient without sacrificing their smooth, quiet character.”
That said, Buck has yet to indicate if the Verano could also see an eAssist hybrid variant, though with the ILX Hybrid hitting the market soon, it seems likely.
