Audi Introduces its First Ever Formula E Car

Audi has pulled the veil from its first-ever Formula E car – the Audi e-tron FE04. 

The all-electric racecar, presented during a special event held it Neuberg Wednesday night, will be fielded by the factory-backed Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler. In Formula E, which is a spec series, the teams are allowed to develop the powertrain on the car, along with the suspension and software. Audi says it focused on making the motor-generator unit extra efficient in its development process of the FE04 and also used a single-gear transmission for added efficiency.

“After nearly 40 years of being successfully active in motorsport on the highest level, Audi now becomes the first German automobile manufacturer to compete in Formula E in order to test and advance the development of new technologies for production,” said Audi board member Peter Mertens. “Following quattro, TFSI, TDI, hybrid drive and many other innovations, our first single-seater race car is a portent of our product offensive in the field of electric mobility that we are ringing in with the Audi e-tron in 2018.”

The white, metallic green and black livery is a departure from the ABT team’s livery from last season, which saw Audi driver Lucas di Grassi win the Formula E championship. This year, the Brazilian will return to the grid with Audi in car number “1”, representative of his championship finishing spot from last year, and will race alongside German driver Daniel Abt. The 2017-2018 Formula E season will kick this winter with the Hong Kong e-Prix on December 2nd and 3rd.
