Buick Verano to be Axed Next Year

The Buick Verano won’t be on the market for much longer.

According to Buick will not be making a next-generation Verano for the U.S., which means that 2017 will be the final year of production for the car. This move is thanks to the Buick’s booming crossover business, which the brand thinks will make up 70 percent of its sales once the Envision goes on sale this summer.

“We haven’t announced plans for a next-generation Verano and are focused on selling the one that we have,” a Buick spokeman told neither confirming or denying the news.

Small sedans like the Verano long served as a gateway product into a brand, but for Buick, that has become the Encore small crossover, which is not only the brand’s best-selling vehicle but also its number one conquest vehicle. Buick also doesn’t want to spread its resources over a wide range of vehicles that each sell in small numbers, instead opting for fewer nameplates, each with high sales.

Last year, Buick moved 31,886 Verano sedans compared to 61,549 sales of the Encore.
