Chevrolet is betting big on all-electric vehicles, which means the Volt may be not long for this world.
According to , citing AutoForecast Solutions, production of the Chevrolet Volt will end at the American automaker’s Detroit-Hamtramck factory in 2022. General Motors has made it clear it plans to launch 20 new electric cars by 2023, which means it will have to make room on production lines for those new models. It’s possible the Volt nameplate will live on, but it’s unlikely to continue taking the form of a plug-in hybrid car. It could be replaced by a plug-in crossover, which makes sense considering how popular that segment has become in the U.S.

The report from AutoForecast Solutions doesn’t mention a direct successor, but this isn’t the first time there have been rumors the Volt, as we know it, will be discontinued. GM has already axed the Cadillac ELR, which was based on the Volt, due to slow sales.
Last month, we reported the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt is outselling the Volt, as more consumers are choosing the battery-electric vehicle over the plug-in hybrid.
