Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive Spied Testing Autonomous Tech

Mercedes-Benz has been spied testing what appears to be autonomous hardware and software on the electric SLS AMG Electric Drive.

This is a rather interesting sighting, as the SLS AMG Electric Drive was launched back in 2013. It looks as though Mercedes-Benz is using the electric supercar to demo its autonomous system on a working and registered EV. The automaker is currently developing a number of different EVs that will be sold through its EQ sub-brand, many or perhaps all of which will feature some sort of self-driving system.

It’s hard to say why the SLS Electric Drive was chosen for this task and not, say, a B-Class Electric Drive. The people mover seems like a better choice if Mercedes wanted to test autonomous tech without parading one of its prototypes in front of the numerous spy photographers that lurk around the Nurburgring, but the automaker definitely has good reasoning. Perhaps this SLS Electric Drive prototype is a mule for a self-driving, fully electric version of the AMG GT. Now that would really be something.
