New Acura NSX Type R Could Become Reality

Honda is considering tacking a Type R badge onto the new NSX, a move that would bring with it a lighter, more track-focused car. 

According to Honda’s head dynamic development, Nick Robinson, told the outlet that although a Type R hasn’t been officially approved yet, there is a large will within the company to build the car. In North America, it’s sold as the Acura NSX, while in worldwide markets, it is badged as a Honda.

The first step in the creation of a Type R is weight savings. “There are places weight could be cut out,” Robinson told . One possibility for a Type R model is the removal of both the electric motors that drive the front wheels, making the car strictly rear-wheel drive. This alone would strip hundreds of pounds from the car’s 3,800-lb curb weight.

Robinson thinks that a Type R version of the car would directly compete with the Porsche 911 GT3. The car may also use active aerodynamics, something that Honda looked into, but left on the shelf for the standard NSX.

At next year’s Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Honda will be entering two NSXs into the competition. While one will be nearly stock besides a roll cage, the second car will be a lightweight, rear-drive version of the NSX that has had its heavy electric motors removed. To fill the torque gap at the bottom of the rev range, the car will make use of electric superchargers, pushing the already twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 well past 500 horsepower. Robinson also let slip to that a convertible version of the NSX is a very likely addition to the lineup.
