Volvo’s U.S. president has hinted that the Swedish automaker will bring a new line of small cars to production.
Speaking with , Volvo‘s U.S. president Lex Kerssemakers was talking about product nomenclature when he mentioned a 20-series model. “It’s pretty straightforward: The 90 is the biggest, and the 40 is the smallest,” he said. “And when there is a 20, it will be a smaller one.” Although didn’t press Kerssemakers for details, this appears to be the first time Volvo has confirmed the idea of smaller 20-series models.
It’s not a huge surprise given the success of smaller luxury cars in recent years like the Mercedes-Benz CLA and BMW 2 Series. What’s more interesting is that there’s a strong possibility that when the 20-series models head to market, they could be coming to North America. Kerssemakers stressed in the interview that Volvo only wants to make cars that will be sold globally.

A strong possibility for the North American market would be a Volvo XC20 compact crossover to compete with models like the BMW X1. A compact sedan would also fit, especially if it’s an electric vehicle with autonomous technology.
For now, it doesn’t appear Volvo has any plans for coupes or convertibles, but Kerssemakers did note that there is a market for premium, but more playful compact cars that Volvo hasn’t leveraged yet.
