Audi is charging ahead with new model launches, and has surprised naysayers by unveiling a diesel-powered SQ7.
The 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter diesel V8 with 435 hp and a robust 664 pound-feet of torque, making it what Audi says is the “most powerful diesel SUV on the market.” In what Audi claims is a world first, the two turbos are supported by an electric-powered compressor, meaning turbo lag should be virtually nonexistent. Full torque is available between a low 1,000 rpm and 3,250 rpm and power will be send to all four wheels with a 40:60 rear bias via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The V8 can get the five or seven-seat SUV to 63 mph in less than 5 seconds up to a top speed as 155 mph. Audi claims the SQ7 will return an average 32.7 mpg. Available all-wheel steering, standard all-wheel drive and an air suspension with continuously variable damping will help the SUV’s performance in all road and weather conditions.
On the outside, the SQ7 gets a more aggressive look complete with a unique grille, air intakes, front apron, roof edge spoiler, diffuser insert, and quad rectangular exhaust pipes.
Like the standard Q7, the SQ7 is available with 24 difference driver assistance systems ranging from lane-keep assist, to automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and animal detection, traffic jam assist, adaptive cruise control and more. The large touchpad infotainment interface, head-up display, LTE data connection, and the responsive digital dashboard will also be available.
Orders will begin in Europe this spring with pricing starting at 89,900 euros. The 2017 Audi SQ7 TDI probably won’t be sold North America, but an SQ7 powered by the same 4.0L TSFI gas engine in the S8 might make its way over to our market in two year’s time.
