BMW 750d Introduced With Quad-Turbo Diesel Engine

The BMW 750d has been officially introduced, and it is powered by a quad-turbo diesel engine.

The engine was announced earlier this month at the 2016 Vienna Engine Symposium and as expected, the 7 Series is the first model to benefit. Its output comes in at 400 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, allowing the flagship sedan to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, an improvement of 0.3 seconds over its predecessor. The engine is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW claims average fuel consumption is down 11 percent.

In light of the massive Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal, BMW also revealed details on how the quad-turbo diesel engine works. The six-cylinder engine has an exhaust treatment system that includes a diesel particulate filter and NOX storage catalytic converter, which are positioned in a combined housing close to the engine. It also has a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system with AdBlue injection.

The BMW 750d xDrive and BMW 750Ld xDrive will be available in Europe starting July, but North American availability has not yet been confirmed. Expect pricing for the models to be announced closer to their launch.
