BMW X1 Plug-in Hybrid Spied Doing Final Round of Testing

The BMW X1 plug-in hybrid variant is getting ready for its debut later this year.

Likely bowing as the BMW X1 xDrive30 iPerformance, the plug-in hybrid crossover will share the same drivetrain as the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer hybrid. That means it will use a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine with 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the electric motor will provide 87 hp. Total system output should be 221 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque for the BMW X1 plug-in hybrid.

What’s interesting about the hybrid powertrain is the ability to send power to the front, rear or all four wheels depending on the drive mode. And just like on the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer hybrid, it will have three pure electric modes: Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and Save Battery. Expect its all-electric range to be between 25 to 31 miles.

It appears that BMW won’t be giving the plug-in hybrid variant any significant styling changes except for the extra door for the charger socket on the front fender.
