New BMW Z5/Toyota Supra Replacement Caught on Spy Video

New BMW Z5/Toyota Supra Replacement Caught on Spy Video

A recent set of spy photos revealed BMW is testing the replacement for its Z4, which will also share a platform with the new Toyota Supra. And now the car has been caught on video for the first time.

Toyota and BMW jointly developed this sports car, with Toyota providing the bankroll while BMW will supply the engine and chassis. This arrangement is similar to how Subaru designed the BRZ/FR-S while Toyota funded it. A version of the car featuring some type of Toyota-sourced hybrid system is also likely.

Seen in the video below is the replacement for the Z4, which may be called the Z5. It is clearly marked by its soft-top convertible roof, a departure from the hardtop convertible found on the previous model. It’s not clear whether the hardtop model will return.

Power for the BMW car will likely come from either a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a turbo inline six, while the Supra is rumored to exclusively get power from the inline-six making somewhere around 500 horsepower.

Styling between the two cars will be entirely different, with the Toyota taking cues from the popular FT-1 Concept. The two companies are working to make sure the two cars don’t compete with each other, with the BMW targeting the Porsche Boxster and Mercedes SLC, while Toyota will look to take on heavyweights like the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT.
