The BMW 2002 Hommage Concept Arrives as a Stunning Tribute

The BMW 2002 Hommage Concept has been introduced, paying tribute to one of BMW’s best models ever.

The special concept will make its public debut at the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and pays tribute to the BMW 2002 turbo, reimagining its design for a modern era.

The BMW 2002 Hommage Concept features a similar “shark nose” front end design found on previous Hommage concepts from BMW, while the body itself lies low against the road. Although it rides on a long wheelbase, it has compact proportions with short overhangs while other aerodynamic details include large spoilers at the front and rear that team up with air intakes to optimize airflow around the car, helping maximize downforce in everyday driving situations.

There’s also a horizontal carbon band that wraps itself around the shoulderline of the BMW 2002 Hommage Concept that is inspired by the signature chrome strip found on the classic 02. The body has been drenched in Space Race Metal paintwork that changes in appearance from a brightly fluorescent blue to grey, depending on the light. Twenty-inch wheels can be found on all four corners, completing the package.

Unfortunately BMW didn’t disclose any details on what’s powering the BMW 2002 Hommage Concept, but that’s likely because this is more of a design study than an actual concept.

“Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president BMW Group Design. “The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.”
