BMW and its cars have been accused of getting a bit soft, but the 2016 M2 that made its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show has done a lot to restore our faith in the “Ultimate Driving Machine.”
This M2 has enthusiasts so excited because it’s a throwback to classic M models. Powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder, the M2 outputs 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque, and boost can be increased to 369 lb-ft in short bursts with the car’s overboost function. Because it weighs only 3,295 pounds, the M2 has a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.3 seconds, and that light weight and near 50/50 weight distribution means that this coupe will be a seriously fun track warrior.

Further increasing our lust for this car, it comes with a manual transmission! No, it won’t be as fast as the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, but we all know the manual is a dying breed, and this is just a sign that BMW hasn’t forgotten about the die-hard driving enthusiasts. Combined with a launch control feature, those enthusiasts should have plenty to keep them entertained.
