BMW i3 'Spaghetti Car' is as Ridiculous as it Sounds

BMW and its long-time partner, Toilet Paper, have created the BMW i3 “Spaghetti Car.”

The German automaker was quick to clarify that the BMW i3 Spaghetti Car isn’t an official BMW Art Car, and will be destroyed sometime after the Rencontres d’Arles Festival of Photography that runs until September 25. Toilet Paper is a bi-annual avantgarde picture-based publication and brand created by artist Maurizio Cattelan, and together with Pierpaolo Ferrari, the BMW i3 Spaghetti Car was born.

Cattelan himself has instructed the car to be destroyed after the event and has actually officially retired from “art” since 2011. So that means the BMW i3 Spaghetti Car isn’t an official BMW Art Car, nor is it art.

The strange BMW i3 will be part of Toilet Paper’s “Hors Cadre / Out of context” exhibition and will also be a mobile piece of the outdoor media installation including XXL wall murals and deck chairs.

As for a true BMW Art Car, the automaker said a BMW M6 GT3 is currently being turned into a “rolling sculpture” by both U.S. West Coast legend John Baldessari and young Beijing-based multimedia artist Cao Fei.
